About Ceramics...
Making pottery takes a relatively long time compared to other mediums.
Once pieces have been hand-build or thrown on the wheel, they are left
to dry out before going through the first firing (biscuit firing).
Next is the decoration, and there are many techniques to choose from...
slip trailing, sgraffito, painting with under glazes, dipping glazes and more - always with an element of surprise and discovery!
About clay bodies...
Different types of clay have different material properties.
Porcelains have the very crisp, white, clean finish
and are great for detailed carving and delicate sculpture.
Stoneware clays are used for utility ware and decorative pieces.
Crank clay is very gritty and is a good clay for garden ornaments, bird baths
and planters because of its resistance to frost.
These are three clays which I mainly work with.
